Swimming
On Monday Alec started up swim lessons again. The last time we did them he was only 6 months old, so we figured it would be a good time to get him back in the water. We changed it up and are taking them at the Broomfield Rec instead of the Erie Rec this time. The water temp at Erie is almost unbearable (during out last classes the instructor wore a wet suit) and I was dissappointed with the instruction, or lack-there-of, at Erie. So, we started at Broomfield on Monday, and the water temp was great. Sadly, the instruction may be worse. The instructor is a teenage girl who said maybe 2 things the entire class, one of which was that we should introduce ourselves, despite the fact that she wouldn't remember us next week. Other than that, she handed us some toys and said we should have the kids throw them and then swim to them. That was it. I do realize that there isn't all that much you can teach little ones, but I don't think some basic instruction is too much to ask for. The kids in the class are up to 3, and I know they are old enough to learn some basic skills. Reagrdless, Alec loved being back in the water and it is good motivation to get us to the pool twice a week. Plus, Matt was able to come with us to the first class, so despite the worthless lesson, we did get a bunch of great pics.

With that budda belly I think he'll always be able to float.
Sure is a cutie.
I too would agree that Rec Center swim lessons are pretty worthless. We had a similar experience at our first swim lessons last fall. We will go to the pool with you anytime to play though, Longmont's Rec Center is pretty warm too.
Hey Erin, I was peaking at your blog and since I know a thing or two about swim lessons, I thought I'd chime in : )
If you don't like the instructor - make sure you tell someone, managers need to know. Parent-tot lessons are basically just for acclimation. Practice blowing bubbles, "jumping" in the water, "floating" on the back. Pass him to the instructor and others in the class so when he is in regular lessons, he's not scared of other adults in the water. Get a milk jug and poke holes in the bottom - use it as a shower. Personally, I'm a big fan of dunking with lots of praise but that's your call : )
Hopefully that's helpful...Alec's a cutie!
